Suspected Firearm Discharge Incident Outside York Mosque and Islamic Centre
Light Foundation is deeply shocked and saddened following the incident outside York Mosque and Islamic Centre in the early hours of this morning.
Reassurance patrols are now in place at York Mosque and Islamic Centre after a local man was arrested following a suspected firearm discharge outside the building on Bull Lane, York, at approximately 2.19am on Thursday 30 July 2026.
We understand that a 44-year-old man from York has been arrested by North Yorkshire Police and remains in custody while enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have confirmed that no one was injured and that the weapon is believed to have been an air rifle.
North Yorkshire Police have stated that it is too early to determine the motivation behind the incident. However, the presence of increased patrols around the mosque provides reassurance to worshippers and the wider community as investigations continue.
We are grateful for the swift response of North Yorkshire Police, their ongoing work to establish the facts, and the reassurance measures being provided to those attending the mosque for prayer.
Any incident that causes fear, distress or concern outside a place of worship is deeply troubling. Every person has the right to worship freely and safely, without fear of intimidation, hostility or hatred.
